Therapy for ADHD Masking & Identity Confusion in Oregon
For when you are entirely exhausted from performing, adapting, and over-functioning, but traditional talk therapy just feels like another script you have to follow.
ADHD masking is more than just trying to fit in—it is a relentless, 24/7 internal script that leaves you feeling like a fraud in your own life. You have forced your brain to perform at the expense of your mental and physical health, and now you aren't even sure who you are underneath the persona.
Traditional talk therapy often asks you to explain these scripts, which only triggers more overthinking. Through Expressive Arts Therapy, we move away from performance. We use creative, somatic, and non-verbal tools to let down the mask safely, process the exhaustion, and reconnect with your actual identity.
Trust and Regulation Statement
Lisa is a Registered Associate Expressive Arts Therapist (#R9511) in Oregon, supervised by Dr. Lisa Aasheim, PhD. This is a 100% virtual, private-pay clinical practice serving high-masking neurodivergent adults statewide via secure Telehealth.
Your Words Have Become Part of Your Mask
High-masking ADHD adults are highly articulate, creative, and intellectually brilliant. You have spent a lifetime using logic, heavy hyper-focus, and intense social scripting to camouflage your traits and survive in a neurotypical world. You are likely the person everyone else relies on, but internally, you feel completely disconnected from who you actually are when the mask comes off.
Because of this, traditional talk therapy often fails you. It is incredibly easy to spend your sessions intellectually analyzing your problems, over-explaining your symptoms, or performing 'good client' habits while your internal nervous system remains in a state of high-stress survival. Your body cannot heal through words alone when words are the primary tool you use to mask.
Healing the ADHD Nervous System Beyond Words
Expressive arts therapy steps completely outside the verbal performance loop. We do not use rigid behavioral protocols or cookie-cutter worksheets designed to make you comply with neurotypical standards.
Instead, we use multi-modal creative processing—shifting organically between sensory tracking, sound, movement, writing, and digital creation. This allows your ADHD nervous system to safely explore your true identity, drop the weight of constant masking, and process emotional overwhelm at your own pace, completely free from the pressure of forced articulation.
